Hello there. For those of you that don’t know me, or don’t know me all that well, my name is Esther. But you might have guessed that from the URL. I’ll be a senior at Drake University in the fall of 2012. That’s in the party capital of the world: Des Moines, Iowa. When I tell people I voluntarily moved to Iowa for school they look at me like I’m crazy, or they scrunch up their noses like something smells bad. I’ve spent most of my life in central Minnesota. A lot of my friends ran off to the coasts the first chance they got. Truthfully, I love the Midwest. I don’t know if I’ll stay in Iowa, or the Midwest, after school. But I don’t think it would be the worst thing ever.
If you read this blog you’ll probably learn a lot about me anyway, but I’ll share some basics. I’m extremely family-oriented. My parents are two of my biggest role models. They’ve each been through a lot. I think if I can be half as strong, passionate, and intelligent as they are, I’ll be all right in life.
Now I’ll use some describing words that can be interpreted in a thousand different ways, but I hope you’ll see them as positives. I can be rather impulsive. I always try to be empathetic and compassionate. I’ve been told I’m very down to earth and easy going. Recently I was told I’m not a physco, which I think can be hard to come by these days.
I love music – all kinds. And I don’t mean like when people say “all kinds, but not country,” or “I listen to everything except rap.” If there’s music in the air, I’m happy. I strongly believe life would be better with background music.
I love movies. Everyone does, I know. But sometimes I think I like them more than the average person. I watch them all the time. I pride myself on my movie collection. I have a watchlist on IMDB about 3 miles long. I enjoy watching previews as much as I like watching movies (it’s all the best parts of a movie condensed down to a minute). Some of my favorites include Tommy Boy, Better Off Dead, Hot Rod, Stand By Me, Aladdin, and The Help. There are more, but that’s a good start.
Finally, I have a passion for media. I’m constantly online checking the New York Times, Twitter, The Washington Post – anything I can get my hands on. I like being on the other side of it too. I can’t write enough to quench my thirst for story telling. I love being behind the camera, or in front of it. I like telling stories through video and writing. Those are some of the things I’m most passionate about. I guess it’s good that I’m a broadcast news major.
